Seven Republican presidential candidates - including Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who has suggested he might concede Florida's expensive 2016 primary to home-state hopefuls Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio - will visit Disney World Tuesday to talk about jobs and the economy at a forum hosted by Gov. Rick Scott. Walker, Rubio and Bush will be joined by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at the summit. They'll appear in front of a backdrop in which Scott's name appears in lettering at least twice the size of the words "Economic Growth Summit." Each candidate will get 30 minutes to speak and answer questions from an audience of about 300 business leaders invited by Scott's Let's Get To Work political committee to Disney's Yacht & Beach Convention Center. Scott's committee and the Florida Chamber of Commerce organized the event without the Republican Party of Florida, which still plans to host its traditional presidential candidate showcase in the fall. Florida is crucial to Republican hopes of recapturing the White House. The state was pivotal in determining the GOP's 2008 and 2012 nominees and figures to be a huge prize again in 2016. But with Floridians Bush and Rubio seeking the GOP nomination and no delegates awarded for finishing second, other candidates may balk at the expense of campaigning in the state's 10 media markets. Some states award delegates not only to the primary or caucus winner but to other candidates who finish near the top. But the Florida GOP has opted for a winner-take-all format for its March 15 primary. Walker, expected to formally declare his candidacy this summer, hinted last week he might not compete in Florida. "If we choose to get in, I don't think there's a state out there where we wouldn't play in, other than maybe Florida, where Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio are, at least in some of the polls, essentially tied and they're going to eat up a good bit of that financial advantage that Gov. Bush is going to have," Walker told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. Walker backed away from that suggestion in Fox News appearance a few days later, citing Scott's forum as evidence he's serious about the Sunshine State. "I'm going to be with Rick Scott, my friend Gov. Rick Scott in Florida, in Orlando next week. We're not conceding anywhere. I'm just pointing out that Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio are going to have a distinct advantage in Florida," Walker said. Lobbyist and Republican fundraiser Brian Ballard said Tuesday's forum, with its focus on Scott's favorite topic of jobs and the economy, shows Scott is putting "his symbolic stamp on the presidential race." And after Democrat Barack Obama carried Florida in the last two presidential elections, Ballard said, Republicans could take a cue from the twice-elected Scott. "He's a guy that wins statewide in the most important, determinative state in the country," Ballard said. With his economy-centered forum, Ballard added, "I think what he's putting together is sort of the map that he used to win, his blueprint." Florida Democratic Party spokesman Joshua Karp scoffed at the Republicans spending the day with Scott. "The whole thing frankly seems really weird. Rick Scott is the last person people should want to have their photo with," said Karp. "Rick Scott has requested that these GOP hopefuls only talk about the economy. We see that as a smokescreen for the fact that they have no plans that aren't a rehash of two-decades-old Republican philosophy that didn't work in the 2000s and took us to the brink of depression.
