First prize in the spot news singles category went to American photographer John Moore of Getty Images who captured the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. First prize in the contemporary issues singles category was won by South African photographer Brent Stirton. While working for Newsweek he pictured the evacuation of dead Mountain Gorillas at Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo. Agence France Presse photographer Roberto Schmidt came second in the spot news stories section with this picture taken in Nairobi, Kenya. Third prize in the sports action stories went to Chris Detrick of The Salt Lake Tribune
